When Pregnancy Turned into Labor

It was a couple of days before labor would start, at that point I didn’t know that labor was only a couple days away. Baby was head down and wasn’t due for another 3 weeks or so. We were just getting settled into the new place. It had been about a week since we moved. I felt like I still had some time to get ready for the baby. I felt totally ready for birth. I had studied so much and thought so much about it. I knew my body could do it. If all else failed we were pretty close to a hospital. I wasn’t scared, but the Braxton Hicks (toning contractions) were getting pretty intense.

I had 2 days of really intense toning contractions. It all started after we had sex. The hormonal rush was so intense I had to sit down and breath for a couple minutes. The rest of the day the toning contractions were really hard to ignore. The next day we had sex again. The same thing happened; I had to sit down afterwards because of the intense rush of hormones. The toning contractions were just as intense as the day before. I had also noticed some bleeding… more like spotting. I went outside to let my belly hang out in the sun. I brought my copy of Holistic Midwifery Volume 1. My book noted that cervical changes towards the end of pregnancy can cause some spotting, so the recent bit of blood was looking totally normal. I wasn’t expecting labor at all because it was still kind of early. Plus Holistic Midwifery had said that if it is labor the bleeding will correspond with the contractions. That would mean that the contractions were the cause of the cervical changes, resulting in slight bleeding. The bleeding and the contractions didn’t seem to be connected to me. Little did I know, the day was just getting started.

That afternoon we had a little running around to do. While we were running around I was thinking I just wanted to go home and chill. The Braxton Hicks were just not letting up and I felt like I needed to relax, still not really expecting labor. We went home. My boyfriend still had an errand to run. I was considering going with him but then I was leaning over the bed like… maybe I should stay. He left and it was just me and my 9 year old son. I let him play video games and then I didn’t really do much.

I hung out on my bed for a couple of hours. I didn’t feel like cooking or eating, plus it wasn’t even dinner time. I was planning a pregnancy meet up with some friends thinking to myself, “ya, sure sounds fun… unless the baby comes tonight…”. After hanging out on my bed for a couple of hours it seemed to hit me all of the sudden. The contractions were not stopping, and bleeding was corresponding with the tightenings. It was happening. I was in labor.

I started studying birth in 2012. It has been an amazing journey. I have learned so much and as my life goes on my birth experiences have been better and better. I have a unique perspective because I was raised by a healer. Once I started learning about birth I couldn't help but to apply my unique upbringing and my studies into my birth plans -- and what a ride it has been. All of the art on my site is done my son Phoenix.
